VARDENBURG, N. J. (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is considering a new warning about the drug’s use during pregnancy.
The warning was issued Friday, the first time the agency has taken an action against a drug in the same class that was originally developed by Pfizer. The warning was based on a study published in March by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that found women who took the drug in pregnancy had about a five- to seven-fold higher risk of developing.
According to the FDA, the use of the drug in pregnancy may lead to a miscarriage, birth defects, birth defects of organs, and heart and lung diseases. Women who took the drug also experienced side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and fainting.
The FDA said it found that the drug was associated with the symptoms of heart problems and heart defects of the heart in people who took it for 10 to 20 days or more before the birth.
